Epilepsy Foundation of Colorado Gala

A Life Outside the Box 2012: Celebrating Vincent Van Gogh
2012 Gala Summary

On April 14, 2012, the Epilepsy Foundation of Colorado held its annual gala at the Ritz Carlton Denver. The theme of the evening was A Life Outside the Box – Celebrating Vincent Van Gogh. Artistry. Ingenuity. Epilepsy. The striking décor by Bouquets was an excellent depiction of the evening’s celebration. Suspended high above tables were open cubes with large branches stretching out beyond the box that could not contain its beauty and growth. The symbolism of this was not lost on the Foundation’s guests for the evening, who generously supported the Foundation’s goals as well as the Jason Fleishman Summer Camp.

This year’s event, led by Gala Committee Chairwoman, Kate Petrocco, was the Foundation’s most elegant and well-attended, with 350 guests in attendance and almost $250,000 raised. Honorary Chairs Layne and Craig Fleishman commented the evening’s success went beyond the critical funding raised to include the heightened awareness of how epilepsy impacts more than 50,000 individuals in Colorado.

The evening included poignant speeches by Layne and Craig, who shared how they refused to allow personal tragedy to box them in by choosing to work with organizations that serve others as a means to honor the memory of loved ones lost too soon. Former camper and current camp counselor Hannah Wolfman spoke bravely of her battle with depression and brought guests to their feet with a standing ovation for being a courageous voice that rang clearly with hope for so many with epilepsy who face similar struggles.

Many in attendance would agree that the true stars of the evening were the four young artists, and current campers, who participated in The Mural Project. Their 6’x 5’ masterpiece, Roots of Hope, visually expresses the challenges, support, strength and hope that each of the artists experience living with epilepsy. Thanks to five generous donors, Roots of Hope sold for $17,500 in the live auction and will travel as an educational piece before finding its home at Children’s Hospital of Colorado.

The Epilepsy Foundation of Colorado thanks the Gala Committee, generous sponsors and guests who made this year’s event such a success. As a result of your generosity, 100 fully-equipped campers will journey to Estes Park this July to experience a safe environment and become part of a community that cares and empowers. The Foundation’s continuum of adult services will also continue to expand, serving more individuals through group therapies and individual counseling.
